Lachat farmhouse receives grant

The Friends of Lachat have been awarded a grant to restore the windows and add a security system to the circa-1770 farmhouse at Weston’s Lachat Town Farm.

The farm is receiving a $2,656 grant from The 1772 Foundation, administered by the Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation.

“We are thrilled to receive this grant, and thank the Connecticut Trust for their ongoing support of Lachat Farm,” said Carol Baldwin, director of Friends of Lachat. “We are very close to finishing the renovation of the farmhouse. Though our goal is close at hand, we still need to raise a bit more money, so receiving this grant is great news. Once the historic farmhouse is completely renovated, it will really become the heart of Lachat Town Farm. We will be able to house a farm manager as well as host classes, workshops, art exhibits, and meetings in the historic homestead.”

Although most of the funds to restore the farmhouse have come from private individuals in town, Friends of Lachat has received two other grants from the Connecticut Trust, a planning grant and a grant to help pay for a new cedar roof on the Lachat farmhouse.

Additionally, the town farm project has also been awarded grants from the Kiwanis Club of Weston, the Weston Education Fund, the New England Grassroots Environmental Fund, and the Connecticut State Department of Agriculture.

“We want to reach out to our community with a request,” said Baldwin. “We are looking for a six-burner gas range for the kitchen in the farmhouse. A stove like this will allow us to offer cooking classes and host events. We are hoping that perhaps someone in town is renovating their kitchen and might be able to donate their range. It can be a tax-deductible donation.”

This summer, Lachat Town Farm is offering a number of events and classes for all ages, covering subjects such as birds of prey, reptiles, totem pole making, foraging, garlic harvesting, and vegetable pickling.

There is also an upcoming weeklong farm camp for children in grades three through five. Spaces are still available for that program. For more information or to sign up visit lachattownfarm.org.
