Elsie Pokorny, mother of Weston Fire Chief, dies at 88

Elsie G. Pokorny of Weston died peacefully at her home on Wednesday, Dec, 26, surrounded by her family. She was 88.

Elsie was born Oct. 5, 1924 in England. She was the daughter of Beatrice and John Bright. She met her husband, Charles, in England during the war, and came to the United States as a war bride in 1946.

Elsie and Charles lived in New York City and owned a record shop, then found their way to Weston, in 1950. They opened the Weston Valet Inc., the first business to open in the Weston Shopping Center.

In 1983, Elsie was appointed by Queen Elizabeth an honorary Member of the British Empire, an award that she was very proud of. She was given this award for her many years of dedicated work for the D.B.E. (Daughters of the British Empire), a philanthropic organization of women of British origin whose main purpose is to participate in philanthropic endeavors and to raise funds to support four homes of the elderly in the United States, one of which is Victoria Home in Ossining N.Y.

Elsie served as State President for Connecticut D.B.E. In addition, she loved to sew, cook and do artwork. She was also an avid entertainer and gardener.

Elsie is survived by her son, Weston Fire Chief John Pokorny, and his wife Lynn of Weston, and her son, William Pokorny, of Fairfield. She is also survived by her sister Mary Rayson of Kingston upon Thames, England and several nieces and nephews, also of England. Elsie was predeceased by her husband Charles in 2000, and by a son Francis, who died as an infant in England.

Following her burial, all are invited to a Memorial Mass on Monday, Dec. 31, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Weston.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully asks that donations be sent in her memory to Victoria Home, 25 North Malcolm Street, Ossining, NY 10562.
